Foundation

About

Foundation is a SNU Common Curriculum module designed to cultivate skills required for work within university and beyond. The curriculum consists of courses that develop critical thinking and communication in speaking and writing, in both Korean and a foreign language, as well as courses in mathematics, science, and computing.

Curriculum Structure

Writing and Speaking

These courses aim to develop essential rhetorical skills such as analytical reading and critical thinking—abilities that form the foundation for academic success and for contributing to society as an educated individual. By strengthening their capacity to speak and write across disciplines, students will learn to create and share knowledge with broader audiences.

Foreign Languages

These courses aim to foster critical thinking and academic communication skills in various foreign languages, enabling students to contribute to academic dialogues with confidence. They also ensure that students will be able to pursue a variety of opportunities in cross-cultural contexts after graduation.

Mathematics, Science and Computing

Mathematics Track: This track aims to help students understand mathematical concepts and principles and develop problem-solving skills. It also helps build the ability to interpret numerical and statistical data to make informed decisions as well as the ability to think logically and express ideas clearly.

Science Track: This track aims to develop students’ academic knowledge, critical thinking, and scientific analytical skills. Through a systematic curriculum and hands-on experiments in the basic sciences, students will learn to explore natural phenomena and the universal laws that underlie them.

Computing Track: This track aims to promote understanding of the fundamental principles of computers and information technology, including artificial intelligence and personal data protection, topics more relevant than ever. The track also seeks to cultivate computational thinking and problem-solving skills using computer-based tools.
