Explorations

About

Explorations provides students diverse opportunities to expand their knowledge, perspectives, and activities. Students explore their interests through a variety of fields, developing a sense of responsibility to their communities as well as to the world beyond them. Self-directed learning activities help students cultivate creativity and leadership, and art and physical education classes help them better express and develop themselves. Small seminar-type classes also allow students to build a sense of community and collaboration with their peers.

The World of Knowledge

This module introduces students to relevant topics and achievements in specific fields of knowledge, allowing them to encounter a variety of academic disciplines, methodologies, and critical perspectives. Courses are designed around general themes and taught at a level accessible to non-majors, and each course encourages active participation and learning.

Empathy and Coexistence

This module encourages students to examine the world beyond academia to better understand the interconnectedness of the global community. Courses aim to foster a sense of global citizenship and responsibility as well as an appreciation for cultural diversity. Students learn the importance of solidarity in the global society as they learn to communicate effectively with audiences of diverse backgrounds. With a focus on sustainable development, students confront local and international issues such as the environment, poverty, human rights, and peace. These courses aim to nurture empathy in students while inspiring them to become proactive agents of change. Through this process, students deepen their sense of empathy and coexistence in their journey to become global leaders who can contribute to building a sustainable future alongside people from diverse backgrounds.

Autonomy and Creativity

This module focuses on cultivating independent research skills and creativity within students, enhancing their ability to utilize their interdisciplinary knowledge to identify and address problems. Students engage in self-directed research by applying various methods to contemporary topics, gaining research and critical thinking skills in the process. The goal of these courses is to foster creative thinking grounded in knowledge from a variety of disciplines, enabling students to discover new analytical methods to address complex problems. While exploring meaningful topics related to their fields of interest, students improve their ability to analyze issues from a holistic perspective with a focus on reaching practical solutions to the issues we face.

Arts and Physical Education

Courses in this module promote creativity and physical well-being through practical education in the arts and sports. Art courses offer hands-on experiences that stimulate visual, auditory, and multisensory creativity, enhancing the capacity for creative thinking and expression. Physical education courses focus on developing physical fitness, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Together, these classes aim to support the balanced development of a healthy body and mind, essential for both academic success and lifelong well-being.

Undergraduate Seminars

This module provides students with opportunities for in-depth learning through close interactions between professors and small groups of students. The module includes general courses in which students learn theories on various topics and engage in unique activities such as field experiences; writing courses in which students focus on improving their communication skills by writing, presenting, discussing, and receiving feedback; reading courses in which students study the foundational works of the humanities while improving their reading skills in foreign languages; and freshman seminars that introduce first-year students to the university and a variety of disciplines while helping them adjust to university life through group activities with their peers.
