About the College of Liberal Studies

About

The College of Liberal Studies was established in 2009 to realize a new vision for undergraduate education. The College was founded on the belief that, to become leaders in a rapidly changing world, students must be able to freely explore and choose their own academic paths and careers. They must also be equipped with the ability to think holistically and globally in a way that extends beyond academic and geographic boundaries. It is only then that they will be able to develop innovative solutions to the problems that society will confront.

The College of Liberal Studies thus offers a curriculum that reaches across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. This diversity enables students to cultivate their intellectual and academic abilities as they choose the academic and professional path that they wish to pursue. The College also strives to develop a sense of community that connects learning and personal development with its diversity of extracurricular programs, programs that aim to foster emotional, relational, and cultural growth and ultimately raise individuals who are passionate about contributing to society.

Students in the College of Liberal Studies discover what it means to learn deeply through mentorships with faculty, interactions with students from diverse backgrounds and majors, and hands-on learning experiences in national and international settings. Their education here will help them develop personally as they seek to discover the unique ways in which they will contribute to their communities.

About the College of Liberal Studies

  1. Flexible Major Selection
Students are able to choose their major without the usual quota- or grade-related restrictions (with the exception of majors that require national certifications, such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and education). The major they select is recognized as a primary major.
  2. Designing an Interdisciplinary Major as a Primary Major
Students are able to design their own interdisciplinary major by taking courses from two or more academic fields (with the support of an academic advisor). As of March 2022, this option is now available to all SNU undergraduate students as a double major track.
  3. Being Registered Under the College of Liberal Studies
Degree certificate: “A Bachelor’s Degree in the College of Liberal Studies, Seoul National University, Major in OOO”
Students must fulfill the major declaration requirements of College of Liberal Studies (e.g., 18 credits, community service, studying abroad).
  4. Student Guidance Program – “Academic and Residential Community”
Students receive advising and counseling as well as access to professional coordinators (student program coordinators), ongoing mentoring and fellowship systems, and a variety of extracurricular programs (e.g., Byeoli Camp, Byeoli Reading Camp, major fair, academic symposia, startup internships).
  5. The Liberal Arts College Experience Within a Research University
Students in the College of Liberal Studies experience the unique benefits of attending a liberal arts college – mentorships (colloquia, personal advising), academic and residential communities (residence life, experiential learning program, alumni networking), and student-led research – along with those of studying at a comprehensive research university, such as the wide selection of majors, in-depth research opportunities, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
