베리타스 강좌 1: 불과 문명

Veritas Lecture 1: Fire and Civilization

이 강의는 인류가 불을 획득하고 불의 온도를 높이는 과정, 그리고 불을 이용한 기술이 문명에 끼친 영향을 알아본다. 불, 토기, 석기, 청동기, 철기, 금·은을 중심으로 일어난 문명의 변화와 기술혁신, 그리고 이것이 갖는 사회적 의의에 대해 이해한다.
이 강의는 협업적 팀 티칭 강의로 재료공학 전공, 고고학 전공 교수자가 공동으로 강의한다. 강의에서는 재료기술의 공학적 원리, 기술의 존재 및 변화를 보여주는 고고학 유물과 유적, 나아가 기술혁신의 사회경제적 영향에 대한 지식을 습득한다.
모든 강의는 하나의 주제를 두 학문의 관점에서 이해할 수 있는 방식으로 진행된다. 예를 들어 청동기 시대에 대한 강의는 다음과 같이 진행된다. 먼저 다음 주제들 1) 석기를 사용하던 인류가 어떻게 전혀 성질이 다른 구리를 만들 수 있게 되었으며 2) 여기에 주석까지 첨가해서 청동이 만들어졌는지 그리고 3) 그 과정에서 인류가 극복해야 할 문제들이 어떤 것이었는지에 대한 강의가 진행된다. 그 후에 고고학적 증거와 그 의미를 바탕으로 그렇게 만들어진 청동이 어떻게 확산되고 인류 문명의 변화를 가져왔는지를 보여주는 강의가 진행된다. 그리고 학생들은 이러한 두 방향에서 얻어진 배경 지식을 활용해서 청동기 시대의 사회 발전이나 대안 그리고 사회적 문제들에 대해서 토론을 진행하게 된다.
